Professor - Lynne DearbornThe 21st Century house supports human wellbeing by incorporating spaces which are unique in their ‘feel,’ providing the user with a series of restorative experiences – elements of nature within a space, daylight, breeze, sound, unfolding of layers and volumes. The external form of the building is derived to complement the functions within. In combination with technological advancements, it creates an equilibrium between different occupants: their age groups, needs, emotional wellbeing, culture, aspirations, and their relationship with elements of nature, health, and sustainability. Spaces where the family can socialize are important for any household; while simultaneously individual’s privacy must be respected.
Marge and Joe are a young couple in their mid-thirties who recently shifted to a University town in Illinois. During the early household life course the couple live with their 2 small kids who utilize the large backyard and connecting entertainment room for playing purpose. As the kids grow and soon enter adolescence, their use of the space undergoes a drastic change. 8 years later, Joe has the option to work from home 3 days a week. During this course, Betty who is Marge’s mother moves in with the family as she is experiencing a few minor health issues and requires supervision at times. 15 years later the children are grown up with Julia entering college and moving out to pursue engineering. Alex has a degree in Product Design and has accepted an offer to work for a technology startup in Champaign. He later wants to start his own studio. He decides to shift back home as he wants to be close to his family while saving upon money. Betty has recently moved into living into an assisted living facility as she now needs full-time oversight to help her with daily activities. 30 years down the line, Marge and Joe are now active retired senior citizens who love to spend their time socializing with their friends, attending church and spending time in the garden or playing with their granddaughter Emma.
